| "Grace
and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our
Lord." (2 Peter 1:2) The knowledge of God and our Savior Jesus brings an
abundance of grace and peace. Is this not really what the world so endeavors to
find? Their illicit sex, drug addiction, alcoholism, etc., are a maze of wrong
methods to find the satisfaction that comes only with knowing God our Savior.
The promises of God in the Bible
are to the believers who become one with God and Christ: "And the Glory
which thou gavest me I have given them: that (Gk. in order that) they may be
one, even as we are one." (John 17:22)
This does not say that believers
will be one with each other. Christianity may never see eye to eye in Doctrine.
It says He gives us His Glory that we may be one with Him! One with God and
Christ, what does that mean? It doesn't mean that He will be one with our
fallen nature. It does mean that we will be partaker of the Divine Nature:
"Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by
these ye might be partakers of the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption
that is in the world through lust." (2 Peter 1:4)
Imagine being a partaker of the
Divine Nature of the Lord Jesus Christ! Who could ask for more? What could be
greater?
Now, how is it accomplished? How
are grace and peace multiplied?
First, we must be diligent;
hardworking, industrious, unrelenting in seeking such a goal. It doesn't come
easy nor on a silver platter. We must have faith, virtue and spiritual
knowledge: "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith
virtue; and to virtue knowledge." (2 Peter 1:5) Grace and peace with God
by faith, virtue (moral righteousness) and spiritual knowledge. To these
virtues we must add: "And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance
patience; and to patience Godliness." (2 Peter 1:6)
In exercising spiritual knowledge
we add temperance or self-control. To self-control we add patience and to
patience we add Godliness of life and actions. Is that all? No: "And to
Godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity." (2 Peter
1:7) To a Godly life we add brotherly care and Christian love.
Grace and peace with God are a
series of Divine virtues: Faith, virtue or moral righteousness, spiritual
knowledge, self-control, patience, Godliness (God-likeness), brotherly care,
and Christian love.
These holy qualities will cause us
to abound in worship and service to our Lord Jesus Christ.
These eternal verities are added
to multiply grace and peace with God. Like addition and multiplication, which
are mutually exclusive, (6+6+6+6+6+6=36, or 6x6=36) by adding these Divine
attributes, we multiply Grace and peace with God.
To desire to be partakers of the
Divine nature is imperative! A shallow Christian who is satisfied to go to
church once or twice will never find grace and peace multiplied. The contented
Christian will never find this place with our Lord! One lady told my wife and
me she had a small cup. If you have a "small cup," and are
comfortable in your spiritual state, this place is not feasible. To find grace
and peace multiplied must become the supreme desire of life. It must be the
inspiration for living. It must be the magnet for our spirit.
"But seek ye first the
Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto
you." (Matthew 6:33)
